Max Switzer, a native of Atlantic City, New Jersey, stumbled upon Mobile while working in Biloxi's casino industry. He and his brother John Switzer soon began developing residential properties in downtown Mobile. When the Crescent Theater became available for refurbishment, they jumped at the chance to renovate it. To learn about the theater's history, the Switzers conducted research at the University of South Alabama Archives. They consulted local history experts to create a plan to revive the iconic theater.

The Crescent Theater shows one movie per night, and you can purchase food and beverages to go.

A classic in the downtown entertainment district of Mobile, the Crescent Theater features independent and local cinema, as well as live performances. The theater is also home to local film competitions, music events, and improvisational comedy. The historic building was originally constructed as a vaudeville theater. Later, the theater served as a vaudeville theater and a restaurant. The Crescent Theater reopened in October 2008 under new owner, Max Morey.

Prior to the fire, the Century Theater was home to Derry's Ole Tyme Cafe. Eventually, this building was renovated to become the Crescent Theater. It helped revitalize downtown Mobile by bringing live performances back to the area. Moviegoers tended to end their evening at one of the many pubs, restaurants, and bars nearby. After the movie, the streets were bustling with a lively happy hour scene. The Crescent Theater, however, continues to thrive.

The Crescent Theater has been in operation since 1885. It started out as a live theatre but in 1912, the Crescent Theater became one of the city's first cinemas to show silent movies. In 1937, the Crescent Theater underwent a complete overhaul by Cooper Van Antwerp. The new, ultramodern cinema provided a cultural shock to the residents of the town. Today, the Crescent Theatre screens independent films and classic films.

The COVID-19 shutdown cut off most of the revenue that the Crescent Cinema relied on. The theater began relying on donations for rent. Unfortunately, this meant that donations went down as people directed their charitable donations elsewhere. But this didn't prevent the Crescent from reopening its doors. Thanks to the community's generous donations, the Crescent Theater Mobile AL is back in business. The film society is currently holding a GoFundMe campaign to help support the theater.
